Check out the following video about how to put your Oracle application server into maintenance mode before applying any Oracle DB/Application patches. Although not all patches require the server to be in maintenance mode but for most of the big/critical/RUP Oracle patches, it is recommended to put the server in maintenance mode for better patch installation performance and minimum patch downtime.
